ITP Renewables is a renewable energy consultancy based in Canberra, with an office in Sydney and remote staff across Australia, New Zealand, and Fiji. We've been in business for over 20 years, advising government and corporate clients in Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific. We work at various levels of government (federal, state, and local), for multilateral development agencies (e.g. the World Bank, the EU), and for private sector clients ranging from large multinationals to small local businesses.

We provide two main categories of service: strategic advice, and engineering support.

Our Strategy Division advises government clients on renewable energy programmes, and corporate clients on market forecasts. We run an analytics team that models the National Electricity Market and the evolution of the energy mix on the grid.

Our Engineering Division's technical team designs utility-scale solar and battery farms and mini/micro-grids, and its consulting team provides client-side engineering services (e.g. feasibility studies, renewable energy roadmaps, due diligence, tendering support, construction supervision, and other non-design services).

What is the role?

We're looking for a design team lead who can take charge of the designs we provide our clients, and manage our design team. We have developed and refined our designs over the years, and want to continue improving them and improving our efficiency in delivery.

As the Design Team Lead, you would be managing the members of the Design Team, and report to the manager of the Engineering Division. Your technical responsibilities would include:

  • Leading and signing off on detailed electrical design reports and drawing packs for grid-connected, hybrid and off-grid renewable energy systems and associated electrical systems (with a particular focus on utility-scale PV and BESS)
  • Building and maintaining relationships with suppliers, contractors, and clients
  • Leading the preparation of proposals for design work for new and existing clients
  • Contributing to proposals prepared by others in the company, as required
  • Project management of design contracts
  • Technical due diligence on designs prepared by clients or contractors outside ITP
  • On-site inspection of renewable facilities including testing & commissioning
  • Keeping abreast of technical and regulatory changes affecting the industry

Your leadership responsibilities would include:

  • Managing a team of three engineers, with opportunities for growing the team
  • Monthly financial reporting on projects under management
  • Mentoring and supporting junior staff in their professional development

Who are we looking for?

There are four areas that characterize an employee: knowledge, skills, experience, and attributes. These all develop over time, so even if you don't have them all but think you'd be a good fit for the role we'd still love to hear from you. We are looking for the following:

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of products on the market, their costs, characteristics, and future trends
  • Existing network of contacts in the industry
  • Knowledge of relevant Australian and international standards, regulations, and industry best practice

  • Functional use of AutoCAD
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including strong report writing skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • PV array design
  • BESS design
  • Cable, switchgear, protection specification and sizing, for DC, LV AC, and MV AC applications
  • Implementing safety in design
  • Desirable:
    • Elek Cable HV, PowerFactory (protection module), XGSLab
    • Substation design
    • Earthing grid design
    • SCADA and Auxiliary system design

Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (electrical / renewable energy preferred)
  • Registered as a professional engineer or Chartered with Engineers Australia
  • Experience managing small teams of engineers, in a team leader role
  • Over seven years' experience in design roles in the utilities or renewable energy sector, including design of HV connected solar farms or BESS
  • Permanent working rights in Australia
  • Desirable:
  • ASP Level 3 certification

Attributes

We look for people who are:

  • Clever: We value creativity, innovation, and the ability to cut through the chaff and fully grasp the essence of a problem. Clever solutions to complex problems energise those around us, and is fundamental to doing our work well.
  • Curious: The urge to scratch an itch posed by an unanswered question drives us to self-improvement. Do you wish you had more time to learn new things? Do you question what you know, asking the hardest question of all: why?
  • Caring: People who truly care about the work they do and the people they work with will excel. How satisfied are you with your solution? How much thought and effort did you put into doing it well and on time? How sure are you that you haven't made any errors? We also want people who care about each other, who help each other in times of need, who forgive mistakes and share in the pride of a job well done.

Where is the job located?

ITP’s headquarters are in Canberra, with an office in Sydney. The engineers you would be managing are in Canberra. While this role would require you to be based in either Canberra or Sydney (or surrounds), we are happy to have you working from home a few days per week. However, we have found that our employees get a lot out of the social element of being in an office with their workmates, so would encourage you to come into the office as much as you're able to.

Joining ITP means becoming part of a close-knit team intent on designing a better future, working on projects we love, and in a supportive environment at any of our locations across Australia.

We play sports and do stretches or yoga once a week (on company time), and frequently host a range of social events for employees in Canberra and Sydney. We have a team dedicated to enriching the employee experience, from the work environment to parental leave benefits.

Benefits of working at ITP include a highly supportive, interdisciplinary environment, a focus on professional development, rich social engagement, and flexible working arrangements.

ITP is an equal opportunity employer. We believe that our workforce should reflect the world we live in. We recognise in our workplace and in our industry that there is progress to be made toward equal representation of all gender and cultural identities. Equal gender representation in management and in our teams is a core performance metric in our recruitment and career development activities.
