Grid Integration of Renewables

A0107_Cook_Islands_Grid_Integration_1.jpeg

This project was conducted for the Cook Islands Electricity Utility and involved reviewing their current grid-connection policy, developing grid stability policy recommendations, developing renewable energy policy, advising on pricing models and formulating recommendations to foster renewable energy solutions under the Cook Islands Government renewable energy plan. The project:

  • assessed the Cook Island’s current grid connection policies and discussed their adequacy for the current levels of uptake of distributed generation (DG).
  • discussed the financial and regulatory arrangements that will be necessary for the higher levels of penetration that will occur because of the Cook Island’s 50% and 100% RE targets
  • outlined the use of a single round reverse auctions to source renewable energy from Independent Power Producers, as well as the parameters and issues that need to be addressed.
  • discussed the technical impacts of high penetration DG, along with the currently available technical approaches to address them.
