South Australian Remote Diesel Assessment

The South Australia Department of State Development (formerly the Department for Manufacturing, Innovation, Trade, Resources and Energy), through RenewablesSA, commissioned ITP Renewables to undertake the compilation of the South Australian Diesel Generation Database and model the economics of a range of hybrid systems.

This database intended to collate plant specific information, such as number of generators, size, age and usage patterns. The aim of the database was to provide information to assist the SA Government to maximise opportunities that might have arisen from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency’s (ARENA) Regional Australia Renewables (RAR) program. The work involved:

  • Surveying South Australian diesel generators of a certain size to gather plant specific data
  • Collating the plant information into a database to assess the available options for renewable energy installations
  • Providing high level economic feasibility of four generation scenarios in a remote South Australian mini-grid including low penetration solar, high penetration solar with storage, diesel only and diesel with storage
  • Detailed modelling of four energy generation scenarios in remote South Australian mini-grid including low penetration solar, high penetration solar with storage, diesel only and diesel with storage.
