Tokelau Renewable Energy Expansion Project

ITP Renewables are currently supporting the Government of Tokelau in the New Zealand Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade funded project to renew and expand the renewable energy systems which power each of Tokelau's atolls.

In 2012, as part of the Tokelau Renewable Energy Project (TREP), three hybrid power systems were commissioned to supply 90+% renewable electricity to the three atolls that comprise Tokelau politically: Nukunonu, Fakaofo and Atafu. These systems consisted of between 240 - 400kW of PV and 1.4 - 1.9 MWh of lead acid battery banks. In the interceding years, electricity demand - and therefore diesel fuel consumption - has increased. The Government of Tokelau Department of Energy is seeking to upgrade and expand these power systems to restore the contribution of renewable energy to 90+% with the addition of PV to the existing arrays and the replacement of existing lead acid battery banks with lithium ion BESS. ITP provided a technical and financial feasibility report to support the project and is currently providing contract management, procurement support, quality assurance and project management services to assist in the completion of this goal.
