Mini-Grid Development Program

Papua New Guinea

Ageing and poorly-maintained diesel generators power the mini-grids in many regional centres in Papua New Guinea. Fuels costs in these centres are high and maintained generators is difficult given local skills and availability of parts. ITP was engaged to identify the least cost generation mix for ten centres which required the qualitative and quantitative assessment of solar PV, run-of-river hydro, biomass, batteries, LNG and LPG. To inform this assessment ITP conducted data analysis, techno-economic optimisation with HOMER Pro and coordinated site visits undertaken by local partners from the University of PNG.
