Ageing and poorly-maintained diesel generators power regional mini-grids across Papua New Guinea. Fuel costs in these remote areas are high, and availability of skills and parts is low. ITP was engaged by the IFC to forecast demand across 17 regional mini-grids, and identify the least cost generation mix for each.
ITP's assessment considered solar PV, battery energy storage, run-of-river hydropower, bioenergy, LNG, LPG, and diesel generation. To inform feasibility and cost estimation for each of these technologies, ITP's local partners at the University of PNG travelled to 10 regional centres to collect data, inspect the existing power system, assess potential generation sites, and engage with key stakeholders.
